180 Years of Community History

The Fredericksburg City Cemetery was established in 1844, and for nearly 180 years has provided a final resting place for many of Fredericksburg's most notable and influential citizens.

Within this tranquil setting lie former mayors, civic leaders, educators, businessmen, professionals, religious leaders, and soldiers. The personal stories of these citizens reflect the story of Fredericksburg itself.

Familiar names grace beautifully crafted stone markers and monuments that often document the accomplishments and achievements of the deceased: Quinn, Embrey, Wallace, Rowe, Stearns, Heflin, Braxton, Wheeler, Scott, Goolrick, and Lacy — among many others.

Also lying in repose are those whose names are no longer familiar and whose personal stories have been lost to time. Collectively, the stories of all the persons interred within the cemetery testify to the enduring nature of Fredericksburg's illustrious heritage.

The Fredericksburg Cemetery Company

The Fredericksburg Cemetery Company, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that owns and maintains the cemetery property. As stewards of this important historic site, the Company works to:

  • Preserve and maintain the grounds, structures, and historic markers
  • Honor those interred by upkeeping the monuments and brick wall
  • Partner with educational institutions such as the University of Mary Washington
  • Provide burial services that meet the community's evolving needs
  • Accept tax-deductible donations to fund preservation efforts

The cemetery remains active, hosting a handful of interments each year, while placing primary emphasis on honoring those already interred.

Cemetery Conservation & Preservation Workshop

Fredericksburg City Cemetery and the University of Mary Washington Department of Historic Preservation work together to present the Cemetery Conservation and Preservation Workshop — a hands-on program connecting students and community members with the practice of caring for historic cemetery markers.

Participants learn appropriate methods for safely cleaning stone markers, documenting their condition, and performing minor stabilization — all in accordance with professional preservation standards.

These workshops serve both an educational and practical purpose: students gain real-world skills while the cemetery benefits from professional conservation attention.

Note: The cleaning of stones and grave rubbings are prohibited without permission from the Cemetery Company. There are appropriate methods for stone cleaning — contact us for information.
